NEW: 4 Extra Large Abstract Paintings in Nonobjective Style

These four 4 new abstract paintings are a short series that I began after the new year.  Each extra large abstract painting is 48″ x 36″.  These are nonobjective paintings done in acrylic on canvas and gallery wrapped.  They are mounted onto 2 x 2 and do not need a frame.  The photos below show the paintings and details of the paintings as well as the gallery wrap method of stretching and display.

Although I have primed and stretched canvases myself for many years, I began taking the finished canvases off of the stretcher bars after paintings had been photographed.  I started this in recent years because of frequent travel and moving.  Large abstract paintings are really a problem to transport and store temporarily when they are stretched.  I stored these unstretched extra large nonobjective paintings using very little space and then restretched them for exhibition or sale.  But I am now returning to using pre-stretched and primed standard size canvases and buying ready made frames in various modern styles.

Stylistically speaking these four new abstract paintings are not outside my established repertoire.  I focused on many of the techniques and compositional movements seen in my other non-objective paintings of the last 15 years.  But I wanted to complete a suite of four related works that could be shown soon in a gallery.  The work on these paintings was a bit more planned and methodic than many of my other recent paintings.  I would not say that planning makes these paintings any better so much as that they are more related and coherent as a group because of the planning.

Considering that I travel so much now in the USA as well as Europe I have to thank my sister and my daughter for there patience and assistance in storage.  My sister particularly has tolerated sporadic studio work in her house.  Extra large abstract paintings take up a lot of space, and working on them in my style occasionally moves paint into the air.

I briefly considered doing a series of small nonobjective paintings on paper but decided, as I usually do, that working on canvas takes no more time to accomplish, does not need a matte or glass over it when mounted and is usually more salable at a better price.  But I will begin a series of smaller nonobjective paintings on canvas sometime this year.

Considering it has been quite awhile since I have displayed images of my new work, I would appreciate feedback from viewers on these four new extra large abstract paintings I have completed as a suite of non-objective works.  These four new paintings will be exhibited along with other work in a one man show at the Carrollwood Cultural Center all of March 2012.

2001 – “Got the Feeling” 48″ x 36″

This is one painting that I never got a really good photo of.  Although I made several, there were always problems showing the opacity versus the transparency of some of the painted elements.  Ironically this 2001 painting was purchased by a well known photographer in the Orlando area.  The style of this painting was characteristic of my work in 2001 and many parts of this style remain in my current approach.
